Which do you think is more important, the talents you’re born with or what you choose to do with them? How often do you think about your gifts, the things you do really well? How often do you avoid taking on a task that is hard for you or that doesn’t fit well with your natural gifts? These are all interesting questions that you should think about from time to time. Professor Dumbledore in Harry Potter, says that what matters in life is not your talents but your choices. As you might expect, J. K. Rowling, the author of Harry Potter agrees, “It is our choices…that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities.” General and former Secretary of State Colin Powell writes, “You can’t make someone else’s choices. You shouldn’t let someone else make yours.” Former Beatle George Harrison said, “Everyone has a choice when to and not to raise their voices: It’s you who decides.” You are born with certain talents. They are your gifts. How you use those gifts are your choices. The quality of your life will depend on the quality of the choices you make. I hope you will choose to make the most of your gifts.
