Words of Wisdom, 05-20-11

We know many sayings that seem to give us good advice. The golden rule tells us, “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.”  Another saying is, “If you are not part of the solution, then you are part of the problem.”  But, once in a while advice makes it through that is in many cases wrong.  For example, “Sticks and stones may break my bones but words may never hurt me.”  I’m afraid that words can do a great deal of harm.

Lisa Merlo-Booth, a writer on relationships, says, “The reality is that words can be just as painful, scarring, and brutal as fists and belts.”

This has become increasingly true with the advent of social networking and the instant ability to strike at and hurt someone with your words.  You must protect yourself on the internet, but realize that you are still vulnerable to other people’s words, words that can hurt you very much.

Hurtful words don’t have to be delivered on the Internet.  They can be whispered into the ears of your friends.  They can be told to your teacher or boss or they can be spread as rumors are often spread—in hushed tones and false confidences.

Be careful of your words.  Follow another wise bit of advice—“Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.”
