I have four young grandchildren and I can guarantee you one thing about them; they all have a sense of humor and love to laugh. In fact, a desire to laugh is one of the things we all share as human beings. We don’t all think the same things are funny, but we all think something is. Since this is Women’s History Month, I decided to devote my words this morning to women who have made me laugh over the years. The first really funny woman I remember is Lucille Ball. She and her husband Desi Arnez were on the show “I Love Lucy,” but it was really Lucille Ball’s show. I occasionally still see reruns of the program and one in particular makes me laugh so hard I cry. Lucy and her friend Ethel are working on an assembly line trying to put cakes into cake boxes. All goes well at first until the conveyor belt begins to speed up. Their attempts to stay on pace are truly hysterical. In the 70’s I watched a lot of funny women, my favorite being Lily Tomlin. Lily played a wide variety of characters rather than herself. A standout was a nasty telephone operator named Ernestine. Ernestine was every customer’s worst nightmare when they called for help from the phone company. Nowadays, my favorite female comic is Ellen Degeneres. Ellen is a great physical comedienne as well as a master of the absurd. She talks about her early school experience, “I was coming home from kindergarten–well they told me it was kindergarten. I found out later I had been working in a factory for ten years. It’s good for a kid to know how to make gloves.” Ellen says, “I have the worst memory ever so no matter who comes up to me – they’re just, like, ‘I can’t believe you don’t remember me!” I’m like, ‘Oh Dad I’m sorry!’ A final piece of advice from Ellen: “Procrastination isn’t the problem, it’s the solution. So procrastinate now, don’t put it off.” I’m thankful for women who make me laugh.
