Honesty Mirror

Last time I talked about self respect and respect for other people. Our ability to get along with others depends on our ability to get along with ourselves. One of the key ingredients in that process is honesty.

Asking For Help

2020-06-07T19:50:26+00:00

’m afraid I come by this characteristic quite naturally. First, I’m a man and second I had a father as a role model who was a champion at this shortcoming. I hate to ask for help. In its most simple, harmless form, it might cost me a few extra minutes because I don’t want to stop and ask for help.

Veterans Day

2020-06-07T19:47:24+00:00

Last Friday I talked about the historic scene that took place in Grant Park, Chicago the previous Tuesday night. If you had been alive, and in attendance at the Palace of Versailles on November 11th, 1918, you would have been a part of another historic moment.

Thanksgiving

2020-06-07T19:40:52+00:00

Thursday is Thanksgiving, which I must say is one of my favorite holidays. There isn’t the pressure to buy the perfect present that there is for some other holidays. Really, all I have to do is show up for dinner and behave myself with my wife’s relatives.

New Year 2006

2020-06-07T19:37:50+00:00

Happy New Year and welcome back to Churchville-Chili Junior High School! The big question is how many times will you write the date as 2005 before you get used to it being a new year? I hate to say it, but when I dated this message, I wrote 2005.

Thanksgiving Words

2020-06-07T19:32:51+00:00

Tomorrow is Thanksgiving, a holiday which seems uniquely American with its history of Pilgrims, Indians and Plymouth Rock. The history that we will celebrate tomorrow is our own, but the need to be grateful and to express our thanks is as human as it gets.

Remembrance

2020-06-07T19:26:42+00:00

Often this year I have quoted Fred Rogers from the book, “The World According to Mr. Rogers.” It is a small book full of the warmth and intelligence that were such a part of Mr. Rogers’ life. This past weekend, the man who played Mr. McFeely was in Rochester at the Strong Museum.

Room Entry

2020-06-16T17:05:39+00:00

How many times a week do you enter a room where there are already people talking? A lot I bet. Here are three possible scenarios for your entrance. First, everyone drops what they are doing, jumps up, hugs you and tells you how glad they are to see you, That’s a keeper---rare, but a keeper.

Boundary

The first video game, invented more than 35 years ago, was called “pong.” It was unsophisticated but very popular. The skill involved was judging the angle of a carom, like in shooting billiards. I think of that game when I watch passing time sometimes in our halls.

Family Birthday Words

2020-06-07T19:16:46+00:00

Today is my father’s birthday. If he were still alive, he would be 94 years old. Today is also my daughter, Jessica’s birthday. She is 33 years old today. When she arrived on my dad’s birthday, we decided to name her after him—her middle name is Nora, my dad’s name was Norman.
