Boredom seems to be a real enemy during this extended period of social isolation. When we’re in school, the only unstructured time is lunch. We know how long our classes last. We know who we’re going to see in the hall in between classes and everything seems to fit nicely into the pre-packaged day. Not so much now!
The first quarter of the school year is history. No efforts of yours can change the results.
Twenty-five years ago, a 15 year French boy named Pascal Bihan came to stay with our family for the summer. His arrival is the event that sparked my interest in learning French.

As I was leaving school on Friday, I heard a teacher talking to a group of students. She was passing along a piece of long-standing good advice. She said, “If you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all.”
We know many sayings that seem to give us good advice. The golden rule tells us, “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” Another saying is, “If you are not part of the solution, then you are part of the problem.”
From time to time, I look at the little book entitled, “The World According to Mr. Rogers. It was published around the time of his death in 2003. It is a gentle book with words from a gentle man, Fred Rogers.
We suffered a tragedy this weekend at Churchville-Chili. Two of our seniors were involved in an accident on Buffalo Road. One, Marcus Blythers, survived and remains in the hospital showing promising signs of recovery. The other, Dijon Pratt, was killed.
I share a study hall with 7th grade English teacher, Mrs. Kunz. I overheard her talking to her students about the spelling list and how tough it was. I checked it out and found that the students were right, it was tough. But, I told them, I could do a Words of Wisdom and use all of the 21 words. Here goes.
This is our last day before holiday break. You can almost hear the collective sigh throughout the building. The holidays, Hanukah and Christmas bring with them the tradition of giving gifts to those we love.
